Today is the big day, folks. All six of us: Ryan, Sam, Mike, Yassir, Jeff, and me are all going to be touring around town. Then tonight we will be taking in Spamalot on Broadway after a nice dinner at Carmine’s in Times Square.
9:30AM - Apartment - I’m the first one up! I know, I know, anyone that has been on a trip with me can tell you I’m usually the last. I had to get the other two to shower so we can head over to Mike’s for bacon and eggs. Mmmm… a home cooked breakfast. Apparently Ryan and Sam got to Mike’s fine last night after we watched MallRats and this morning Sam, with camera in hand, and Mike went to find a good sunrise picture.
11AM - Wandering - We’ve been wandering around town for a bit seeing some sights. We first saw Rockefeller Center, and it had steamy fountains and an ice rink in front. Here’s a picture from the base:
We then wandered down to see the Citigroup Center, a huge building that looks like it’s on stilts. A stop at the Apple store (again) and a better look at Central Park were next. I’ll be putting the more touristy shots on my Flickr account.
12:30PM - Penang - We’ve decided to stop in Penang, a Malaysian restaurant, for lunch. We wandered a little more after Central Park then caught a subway over to Chinatown. We’ve all decided to let Sam order us some food, since most of the menu was hard to read. Halfway through ordering he switched to Chinese because the English was difficult to pronounce.
1PM - Chinatown - We’re going to wander down to the water. We saw the entrance to the Manhattan Bridge, under construction like most of NYC. Apparently Jeff isn’t used to the roadway noises: he screams like a girl when people start honking at each other. Anyways, here’s a pic of a road in Chinatown and then one of Sam taking pictures from the middle of the street:
2PM - Judicial Area - We wandered under a portion of the Brooklyn Bridge. It was all rounded with various stairs and benches: a perfect environment for skateboarders and BMXers, of which we saw many. We also saw the big court house and the Supreme Court. Unfortunately we didn’t see any activist judges while there, to Jeff’s dismay.
3PM - Battery Park - So trying to leave the Supreme Court area to come down to Battery Park on the southern tip of Manhattan Island was an adventure. Mike and Ryan, aided by a tourist map, decided we should take the 4 train down. We were then told, after waiting about 15 minutes, that it wasn’t running right now so we should take the J train. We then waited for that one for 15 minutes before deciding to walk the two blocks over to a subway we knew was running. Needless to say, we are now at Battery Park looking across the water at the Statue of Liberty: It’s smaller than I thought it would be. Here’s Jeff, with Sigma-Chi dictated popped collar, and Yassir:
4PM - Apartment - We’re all back to our respective apartments now, needing to change for dinner and Spamalot. Mike was apparently going to go have a nap. Yassir and Mike are in full suits while the rest of us are in dress clothes (along with a suede jacket for myself). Sam is wearing a winter coat and a backpack: he wanted to bring his full tripod for photos of Times Square. Silly Sam.
5PM - Subway - Making our way to dinner and the show, will update when I have a chance!
6:30PM - Carmine’s - Dinner was amazing! The way Carmine’s works is that each dish is good for 2 to 3 people so you order everything to share. We got a caesar salad and parmesan garlic bread for appetizers, then a lasagna, veal scaloppine with lemon butter, and chicken parmigiana for entrees. Sam took lots of pictures, so I’ll link his pics soon. We’re going to be having dessert then the show starts at 8. Look at our dessert, titled ‘Titanic’: Oh God it is good!
8PM - Sam S. Shubert Theatre - We’re here for the show! Spamalot, for those that don’t know, is the Broadway musical “Lovingly ripped off from the motion picture ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’”. I will be turning the BlackBerry off pretty quick, but I will give a full update when the show finishes. Jeff keeps muttering about wanting to have a Manhattan in Manhattan so we will likely be going for drinks later.
10PM - Sam S. Shubert Theatre - Wow. Just Wow. That was the best musical I have seen yet! I definitely need to come down and see more Broadway musicals. It was very well executed and they were hilarious, especially the actors playing Lancelot and Galahad. Will post more when we stop moving for a bit.
11PM - Mike’s Apartment - Well, we’re back from the show. Mike changed and we will likely be moving out to have some drinks. We all loved the show and bought souvenirs: Jeff bought the soundtrack (which I will be copying as soon as there’s a computer available), Ryan bought an “I’m not dead yet…” shirt and I bought a “Fetchez la vache” shirt. Drinks ahoy!
11:30PM - O’Hanlon’s Bar - This update was posted the morning after. We tried O’Hanlon Ale and Brooklyn Lager: we all preferred the lager. We played a few rounds of pool and we discovered that Sam is a bit of a shark and that no matter what cue Yassir uses, it sounds like it’s cracked. Last but certainly not least, Jeff finally got his Manhattan in Manhattan:
